There are still plenty copies of the current edition of First Alaskans, but I’m busy plugging away at the next issue. Before it’s replaced with the next edition, I wanted to share some of my favorite pages. We gave the magazine a mini design facelift this edition with one new font and a few eliminated to streamline the look and make the design cleaner, more modern. You might also notice new department labels that display the word “Our” in a circle, one of many little changes as the magazine truly makes itself at home with First Alaskans Institute’s vision. Instead of “Traditional Food” and “Native health” new department labels speak like an insider, not observer of Alaska Native culture — Our Culture, Our Health, etc. I’m continually proud of the work we do here with this publication. Now back to get back to designing the next edition!
First Alaskans: Kick-start spring with April/May 2012
Wedding Invitations: A summer Solstice wedding
When Marion Kelly called and asked if I would design her wedding invitations she had a special request. She wanted to include artwork drawn by her neice and nephew but was having trouble picturing how it would all come together. We met for a cup of coffee at Side Street Espresso in downtown Anchorage and she showed me the detailed, beautiful arctic fox her niece drew and told me about the summer Solstice theme to the wedding.
I was so excited to execute the sketch after I left the meeting that she had a first draft within 24 hours. It was a treat to work with a bride and groom with such light hearts, great personality and beautiful sense of humor to infuse in their invitations. The total package included invitations, RSVP postcards, thank you cards and custom return address stickers.
In one email she wrote: “Annette, we love it so much we can’t stand it!! Thank you, so much, for your vision and expertise.” But really I thank her for being a dream client and so much fun to design with.
My inspiration, my mom
My mom is an amazing lady. As a new business owner, when work and life get hectic I have a hard time imagining how where she got all her energy when I was growing up. An amazing career woman in addition to helping my dad run his business, super involved in mine and my brother’s activities, honorary mom to so many of my friends and still brought us all around the dinner table for family time every night. She is an inspiration and I’m so lucky to have such a wonderful role model and mentor in my life. I love you mom, happy mother’s day! And happy day to all the wonderful moms in my life.
Travel: Visiting the Newseum
The Newseum was exactly what I wanted it to be and more. The highlights:
- A live version of Today’s Front Pages
- Slices of the Berlin Wall
- The exact costumes worn by my hero Tina Fey and Amy Poehler to spoof Sarah Palin and Hillary Clinton on SNL
- A Pulitzer prize winning photo exhibit with a photo of a vulture waiting for a starving child to lose strength so touching it literally brought tears to my eyes
- A tribute to journalists who had given their lives to war coverage
- A somber 9/11 tribute with front pages from around the world
- Glass encased original newspapers and magazines from major events throughout history dating back to before newspapers were newspapers. I could have stood in that portion and gawked for weeks.
Travel: Standing on the steps of history
There’s something so iconic about the Lincoln Memorial. From the scene in Forrest Gump where Forest and Jenny run through the reflection pool toward each other to when an animated Abraham Lincoln come alive and talks to Lisa in an episode of the Simpson’s it plays a lead role in America’s memory and we all know what it looks like. But it’s so much more impressive in person. I tried to capture some of that feeling of awe at the large stone columns and beautiful architecture in these pictures. I regret that the reflection pool was closed, covered and fenced off during our visit, but what can you do?
Travel: Walking the Washington mall
I’ve been to Washington D.C. three times in my life, and it’s just as beautiful every time. When I go there I feel so connected to history, our nation’s government and things I usually only read about. The weather was perfect while we were there, warm, but not too hot for these cold-blooded Alaskans. We spent one evening wandering the mall and photographing everything in sight.
Travel: Afternoon at the museum
We spent hours at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History during our trip back East and didn’t see the half of it. The entry looks exactly like the “Night at the Museum” movies. We spent a ton of time in the dinosaur and prehistoric exhibits. The gem exhibit was pretty fantastic too, my favorite was a 1,000 carat aquamarine stone — it rivals the Hope diamond in my eyes. I told husband it would probably be OK if he wanted to have a ring made of it for me someday. We also got to sport some pretty rockin’ 3-D glasses for the IMAX.
